We are now well and truly heading into the outback. Having left the Flinders Ranges behind we did our last stock up on supplies at the small township of Leigh Creek. Having stocked up it was then an overnight camp at Farina Ruins before we got stuck into the Oodnadatta Track (love trying to spell that!)
Farina Ruins was an interesting place. The town grew up on the back of the old Ghan railway which went from Adelaide to Alice Springs. The last occupant left in 1975 where upon the place has all but gone. Some amazing history there....the early pioneers really do make us look like a bunch of "Jessies"today!
From here it was a fuel stop at Maree which is the start of the Oodnadatta Track. This is one of Australia's many outback routes that follows the Ghan Heritage Trail. It is 600 km's of unsealed track to the Stuart Hwy at Marla. There are two fuel stops at William Creek and the pink road house at Oodnadatta......
What was it like? Well we certainly felt out there! We were behind some heavy rain a few days before so there was some water on the track but not too mad....thank goodness. It could easily turn into a nightmare. Fuel at the pink roadhouse was the best to date...$2.25/litre. We did two overnight camps and would have done more but the flies were bloody mental!
Coward Springs (not sure how it got its name) was an oasis in the desert. Again it was a station siding along the old railway line. A beautifully put together camp spot with bush inventivness and the use of the old railway sleepers from the Ghan. It also has a natural hot spring fed from hot artesian water. Awesome and just what the doctor ordered! The second was a bush stop about 30k's south of Oodnadatta. Tilly is becoming an accoplished baker. Hope you like the pics and see you at Ulura....Hoppo
